Lomelosia stellata (L.) Raf. (Caprifoliaceae)

- ITALIA (EMR). Species to be excluded from the flora of Italy (Emilia-Romagna).

Plants referred to this species were discovered along the Taro river in 2008 and recorded as new for the flora of Italy (Ghillani and Alessandrini 2012). The identification was confirmed by L. Villar (Spain) based on the analysis of photographic material. However, the correctness of the identification was questioned in the Acta Plantarum Forum by Valerio Lazzeri (https://www.actaplantarum.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=826601), who proposed to refer the plant to Lomelosia micrantha. The analysis of fresh and herbarium specimens allowed us to exclude L. stellata and to attribute the taxon to the proposed species (see the following Notula).

L. Ghillani, M. Adorni, A. Alessandrini

Lomelosia micrantha (Desf.) Greuter & Burdet (Caprifoliaceae)

+ ITALIA (EMR): Medesano (Parma), fiume Taro presso Felegara (WGS84: 44.714190°N, 10.111376°E), prato arido su terrazzo alluvionale consolidato, 125 m, 3 June 2025, L. Ghillani, M. Adorni (FI). – Species new for the flora of Italy (Emilia-Romagna).

This species was identified using Flora Europaea (Jasiewicz 1976), under the name Scabiosa micrantha Desf., by analyzing photographic material and herbarium samples available online. The involucel-corona of Lomelosia micrantha is significantly narrower than that of Lomelosia stellata. Moreover, the involucral bracts are entire, while in L. stellata they are frequently divided (Devesa 2007). Lomelosia micrantha occurs from the central Balkan Peninsula to central Asia. This record represents the westernmost locality of the species’ range. The population of the Taro river consists of approximately 100 individuals and is the only one known for this species in Italy.

L. Ghillani, M. Adorni, A. Alessandrini

Lophiolepis morisiana (Rchb.f.) Del Guacchio, Bureš, Iamonico & P.Caputo (Asteraceae)

− CAM: Species to be excluded from the flora of Campania.

Lophiolepis morisiana is recorded in Campania only for the Partenio massif (“Monti di Avella”, Avellino) (Moraldo & La Valva, 1989, under the name Cirsium morisianum Rchb.f.). In fact, the locality “Lago Matese” (Caserta) reported by Bianchini (1988) after Martelli and Tanfani (1891) is erroneous, as those authors indicated “Cirsium eriophorum L.” (currently L. eriophora (L.) Del Guacchio, Bureš, Iamonico & P.Caputo), in turn to be interpreted sensu Arcangeli (1892, under Cnicus) (cf. Martelli and Tanfani 1891, p. 173) and likely to be referred to L. tenoreana (L.) (Petr.) Del Guacchio, Bureš, Iamonico & P.Caputo (Del Guacchio, pers. obs.). However, the indication by Moraldo and La Valva (1989) is not supported by any available specimen (NAP!), whereas in the same massif and surrounding areas, the similar L. lacaitae (L.) Del Guacchio, Bureš, Iamonico & P.Caputo, although not reported by them, indeed occurs (Cerbone and Del Guacchio, in prep.).

P. Cerbone, E. Del Guacchio

Orchis patens Desf. subsp . brevicornis (Viv.) K.Richt . (Orchidaceae)

+ EMR: Bardi (Parma), Passo del Pellizzone (WGS84: 44.67979°N, 09.74392°E), prato arido cespugliato, 1015 m, 26 May 2025, leg. C. Mazzera, det. C. Mazzera, M. Adorni (FI). – Subspecies new for the flora of Emilia-Romagna.

Orchis patens occurs only in northern Africa (Algerian-Tunisian Atlas) and north-western Italy, while Canarian populations were recently treated as O. canariensis Lindl. African populations are referred to the autonymic subspecies, while Italian ones, previously reported only for Liguria, are treated as O. patens subsp. brevicornis (Calevo et al. 2021, 2023). The population reported here consists of only nine individuals scattered over a surface of 15 m2 in a semi-natural dry grassland with southern aspect. It is the highest (the first one above 1,000 m a.s.l.) and the northernmost of the range of this species.

Origanum onites L.(Lamiaceae)

+ PUG: Gallipoli (Lecce), Loc. Itri (WGS84: 40.007993°N, 18.035439°E), Cava per l’estrazione di conci di calcare “carparo” dismessa, 20 m s.l.m., 3 September 2025, leg. R. Gennaio, det. R. Gennaio, Q.G. Manni (FI). – Species new for the flora of Puglia.

R. Gennaio, Q.G. Manni

Pimpinella anisoides V.Brig. (Apiaceae)

− PUG: Species to be excluded from the flora of Puglia.

Pimpinella anisoides is reported as occurring in Puglia in the latest checklist of the vascular flora native to Italy (Bartolucci et al. 2024) based on Bianco et al. (1998) as well as in the recent Flora d’Italia (Pignatti et al. 2018). In Bianco et al. (1998), this species is reported only in the appendix among the sporadic species recorded in two vegetation relevés, and no deposited specimens in BI or CAT have been traced, thus raising doubts about the actual occurrence of the species in Puglia. Earlier, Scaramuzzi (1952) and Bianco (1962)— the latter confirming Scaramuzzi’s record and treating it as a new species for Puglia — reported the species from the Murgia di S. Elio (Altamura, Bari). We revised the specimen collected by Scaramuzzi and preserved in BI [Murgia di S. Elio, 18 June 1949, F. Scaramuzzi (BI No. 23744)] and we attribute it to Ammoides pusilla (Brot.) Breistr. We also revised another specimen preserved in BI under Pimpinella anisoides [Bosco “Selva” – Alberobello, 27 July 1952–27 August 1952, M. Iannice (BI No. 27610)], which we likewise attribute to Ammoides pusilla (Brot.) Breistr.

Potentilla verna L. (Rosaceae)

+ LAZ: Amatrice (Rieti), Cardito, between Casa Cantoniera and Poggio Cancelli SS577 (WGS84: 42.582073°N, 13.319585°E), mesophilous grasslands, 1275 m a.s.l., 24 August 2024, leg. R. Di Pietro and P. Fortini, det. R. Di Pietro and E. Proietti (FI). – Species confirmed for flora of Lazio.

The species is not reported for the flora of Lazio either in Anzalone et al. (2010) or in Lucchese (2024). Tondi and Plini (1995) do not include P. verna among the species occurring in the Lazio slope of the Gran Sasso-Laga National Park, while Conti and Bartolucci (2016) indicate this species as having been erroneously included in the past for the flora of the Gran Sasso-Monti della Laga National Park.

R. Di Pietro, E. Proietti

Senecio apenninus Tausch (Asteraceae)

+ EMR: Monchio delle Corti (Parma), tra M. Paitino e M. Sillara (WGS84: 44.371618°N, 10.056568°E), formazioni erbose con affioramenti rocciosi, 1772 m, 15 July 2025, M. Adorni, R. De Vivo (FI); Monchio delle Corti (Parma), tra Cima Canuti e M. Pitturina (WGS84: 44.351209°N, 10.110477°E), praterie di cresta, 1735 m, 8 July 2023 (Herb. M. Adorni). – Species new for the flora of Emilia-Romagna.

This species has recently been re-evaluated by Conti et al. (2019), who consider it endemic to the central Apennines, where it is widespread in Marche, Umbria, Lazio, Abruzzo, and doubtfully occurring in Molise. The discovery in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines significantly shifts the limit of its range northward.

M. Adorni, R. De Vivo

Senecio nemorensis L. subsp. apuanus (Tausch) Greuter (Asteraceae)

+ EMR: Ventasso (Reggio Emilia), nei pressi del Passo del Cerreto (WGS84: 44.304982°N, 10.223415°E), margine di faggeta lungo strada, 1180 m, 11 August 2025, M. Adorni, C. Zanni (FI); Ventasso (Reggio Emilia), Fiume Secchia a monte de La Gabellina (WGS84: 44.316237°N, 10.224762°E), bosco ripariale di Alnus incana, 1095 m, 11 August 2025 (Herb. M. Adorni) – Subspecies new for the flora of Emilia-Romagna.

Our findings are very close to the populations reported by Marchetti (2019) for the Tuscan side of the Cerreto pass.

M. Adorni, C. Zanni

Thalictrum simplex L. subsp. tenuifolium (Sw. ex Hartm.) Sterner (Ranunculaceae)

+ PIE: Cesana T.se (Torino), zona umida sotto Cappella del Buon Soccorso (WGS84: 44.93189°N, 6.80763°E), 1533 m s.l.m., 28 July 2025, A. Selvaggi (FI, Herb. Selvaggi). – Subspecies confirmed for the flora of Piemonte.

The historical occurrence of this taxon in Piemonte is based on Hand (2001), who cited a specimen preserved at B, collected at “Sestrière, s.d.” by Edoardo Rostan [1826–1895]. The occurrence at Sestrière, geographically close to the new locality documented here, should be considered almost certainly extinct as a consequence of land-use changes that affected the area after 1935 due to the development of the homonymous ski resort.

Trifolium mutabile Port. subsp. gussoneanum (Gibelli & Belli) C.Brullo & Brullo (Fabaceae)

– Subspecies confirmed for the flora of Basilicata.

In Basilicata, this subspecies was first recorded by Gavioli (1948) as Trifolium vesiculosum Savi var. mutabile Savi. The specimen, dating back to the 1930s and kept in FI! was subsequently revised by Scoppola et al. (2016) as T. mutabile var. gussoneanum.

Floristic records of regional alien taxa

Ficus carica L. (Moraceae)

+ (NAT) PIE: Collegno (Torino), cavalcavia di Corso Francia presso via Torino (WGS84: 45.073137°N, 7.587952°E), interstizi del muro di contenimento del cavalcavia, 298 m, 5 June 2025, M. Lonati, G. Nota (FI). – Status change from casual to naturalized alien for the flora of Piemonte.

Ficus carica is a Mediterranean species, considered alien in some northern Italian administrative regions (Bartolucci et al. 2024). In the collection site described here, several plants of different ages and heights colonize a vertical stone wall, forming a stable population. The largest plants are fruit-bearing. The status change from casual to naturalized is consistent with the status documented in the other Italian regions where the species is considered alien.

M. Lonati, G. Nota

Laurus nobilis L. (Lauraceae)

+ (NAT) PIE: Ronco Biellese (Biella), all’interno della Riserva Naturale del Brich di Zumaglia (WGS84: 45.5848°N, 8.0918°E), bosco misto di latifoglie e conifere, 605 m, 17 September 2025, E. Bonivento (FI). – Status change from casual to naturalized alien for the flora of Piemonte.

The species colonizes a mixed broadleaf and conifer forest in the natural reserve “Brich di Zumaglia”, with Pinus strobus L., Picea abies (L.) H.Karst and Castanea sativa Mill. More than one hundred individuals have been found in an area of 2,500 m2, belonging to two different generations. There are mature plants between 6 and 8 m tall as well as younger individuals growing below them. In the undergrowth there is also an abundance of Prunus laurocerasus L.

E. Bonivento

Nerium oleander L. subsp. oleander (Apocynaceae)

+ (NAT) MOL: Campomarino (Campobasso), tra la SS16 Adriatica e la ferrovia (WGS84: 41.934632°N, 15.096622°E) all’interno del sito Natura 2000 ZSC IT7222217 ‘Foce Saccione - Bonifica Ramitelli’, 0 m, E, 26 September 2025, leg. L.A. Santoianni, det. M.C. de Francesco, (FI, IS n. 06313). – Naturalized alien species new for the flora of Molise.

A population of approximately fifty individuals is found in the back-dune zone dominated by Juniperus macrocarpa Sm. and by reforestation plants, such as Pinus halepensis Mill., P. pinaster Aiton and P. pinea L. Furthermore, the presence of other individuals along the Molise coast, both on the more degraded edges of the back-dune areas and in coastal rush beds, suggests that the species is naturalized in this administrative region.

Festuca × stacei (Krahulec) Ardenghi, Banfi & Galasso, comb. nov. (Poaceae)

urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:77382080-1

≡ ×Festulpia stacei Krahulec, Brit. Irish Bot. 8(1): 2 (2026).

A new name, ×Festulpia stacei Krahulec, was recently assigned to the hybrid between Festuca rubra L. and Vulpia myuros (L.) C.C.Gmel. (Krahulec 2026), whose occurrence in Italy was ascertained by Ardenghi et al. (2011). Since phylogenetic treatments currently consider Vulpia C.C.Gmel. as a synonym of Festuca Tourn. ex L. (see for example Soreng et al. 2022), a taxonomic view also shared by Bartolucci et al. (2024), a new combination? for this hybrid under Festuca is provided here.
