Both species were recorded along the Alcantara River, one of the main rivers in eastern Sicily. Information on the morphological and ecological characteristics of the two species is presented.</p>

      <title>Introduction</title>
<p>A large percentage of red algae inhabit marine environments, and only about 10% occur in a limited number of freshwater habitats, due to their stenovalence (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Kumano 2002</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Crowell et al. 2025</xref>). In particular, they are mainly found in rivers with running waters, where they colonise rocks exposed to turbulent flow conditions (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B25">Sheath and Hymes 1980</xref>). A consequence of this ecological preference is that some of these algae appear to be rather rare and restricted to specific habitats and are unable to survive in anthropised areas (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">Eloranta and Kwandrans 2002</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B28">Simić et al. 2010</xref>).</p>
<p>A significant percentage of freshwater red algae (about 70%) belongs to the order <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="order" reg="Batrachospermales">Batrachospermales</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, one of the four orders composed exclusively of freshwater taxa that primarily inhabit flowing waters (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Kumano 2002</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B29">Vis and Necchi 2021</xref>). The members of this order generally have macroscopic uniaxial gametophytes with whorled branches, giving a bead-like appearance or forming a pseudoparenchymatous thallus with mucilaginous or cartilaginous consistency. Most members have a heteromorphic triphasic life history consisting of the sporophyte (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Chantransia">Chantransia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> stage), the gametophyte (monoecious and/or dioecious), and the carposporophyte phases (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Sheath 1984</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B26">Sheath et al. 1996</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">Necchi and Carmona 2002</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B29">Vis and Necchi 2021</xref>).</p>
<p>According to a molecular phylogenetic analysis based on two molecular markers, the order <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="order" reg="Batrachospermales">Batrachospermales</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> currently comprises a single family, the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Batrachospermaceae">Batrachospermaceae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Entwisle et al. 2009</xref>). This family comprises 21 genera (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B29">Vis and Necchi 2021</xref>), including <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Lemanea">Lemanea</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> Bory and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Paralemanea">Paralemanea</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> (P.C. Silva) M.L. Vis &amp; Sheath. These entities have likewise been subject to an intricate taxonomic history culminating in their separation and present status as distinct genera, as described by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B31">Xie et al. (2004)</xref>. Mitochondrial genome investigations further corroborate the modern separation of these two genera. <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Paralemanea">Paralemanea</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> species possess the largest genomes and most extensive intergenic regions sequenced to date within the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="order" reg="Batrachospermales">Batrachospermales</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>. Notably, they are the only taxa within the order to contain introns, which are absent in all other members, including the sister genus <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Lemanea">Lemanea</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Lemes Da Silva et al. 2025</xref>).</p>
<p>Morphologically, the two genera <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Lemanea">Lemanea</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Paralemanea">Paralemanea</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> can be distinguished mainly by the following characters: <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Lemanea">Lemanea</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> has spermatangia arranged in circular papillae at the nodes and internal organisation with T- or L- shaped ray cells abutting the cortex and a main axis without cortication; <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Paralemanea">Paralemanea</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> has spermatangia arranged in rings around nodes and internal organisation with simple ray cells and cortication around the main axis. In particular, axial filaments are surrounded by cortical filaments, and the simple ray cells consist of two layers; the proximal one does not touch the outer cortex, and the distal one is generally “Y” branched and connected to the cortex. Furthermore, the genus <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Paralemanea">Paralemanea</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> includes species that lack stalks (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B30">Vis and Sheath 1992</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B26">Sheath et al. 1996</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B29">Vis and Necchi 2021</xref>).</p>
<p>In Italy, reports of species belonging to these genera are scarce and scattered (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">Barone et al. 1995</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Mannino 2001</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Mannino et al. 2003</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">Ceschin et al. 2012</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">2013</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B23">Saber et al. 2016</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Campisi et al. 2020</xref>). Indeed, the taxonomy, distribution, and ecological role of these red algae have been poorly investigated, especially in Sicily. Only three records of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Lemanea">Lemanea</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> are available for this region, all referring to <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Lemanea">Lemanea</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="fluviatilis">fluviatilis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> (Linnaeus) C. Agardh (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">Barone et al. 1995</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Mannino 2001</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Campisi et al. 2020</xref>). As far as we know, there are currently no published reports of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Paralemanea">Paralemanea</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> species in Sicily, creating a research gap in this field. Moreover, species of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Batrachospermaceae">Batrachospermaceae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> have never been reported from the Alcantara River, one of the most important freshwater bodies in Sicily. Although this river has been the object of several studies, particularly regarding its ecological status (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Gugliandolo et al. 2009</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Guglielmo et al. 2013</xref>), no detailed investigations have yet been carried out on its algal flora.</p>
<p>During field surveys along two sites of the Alcantara River, numerous thalli of freshwater red algae referable to the genera <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Lemanea">Lemanea</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Paralemanea">Paralemanea</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> were found. Considering the scarcity of data on these genera in Sicily, we deemed it worthwhile to investigate these specimens in greater detail in order to fill the existing knowledge gaps and to provide new information on the ecology and habitat of these species.</p>

<p>The study was conducted along the Alcantara River, the only river park in Sicily. Its waters flow eastwards, between the Nebrodi and Peloritani mountains on its northern side and the volcano Etna on its southern side. The river is 52 km long, flowing through mountainous to hilly areas. Over time, the river has slowly eroded the hard lava rocks of Etna, giving rise to a landscape of rapids, waterfalls, and narrow, deep canyons, alternating with long stretches with more typical riffle-run geomorphology (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Gugliandolo et al. 2009</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Guglielmo et al. 2013</xref>).</p>

Specifically, both the vegetative and reproductive diacritical characters necessary to distinguish genera and species were analysed (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B30">Vis and Sheath 1992</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B29">Vis and Necchi 2021</xref>): i) presence or absence of a stalk and whether the thalli were branched or unbranched; ii) presence of axial cortical filaments and T- or L- shaped ray cells abutting the cortex or the connection with a Y-shaped (detectable in cross and/or longitudinal sections); iii) arrangement of spermatangial sori; iv) presence or absence of the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Chantransia">Chantransia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> stage and its branching pattern (unilateral or alternate); v) morphometric characters such as: the nodal diameter in the basal, median and apical portions; the internodal diameter in the basal, median and apical portions; the ratio between nodal and internodal diameters; the length and diameter of the carposporangia.</p>
<p>The diacritical characters, as well as the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Chantransia">Chantransia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> stage, were photographed using an Olympus BX 40 optical microscope (Olympus Optical, Tokyo, Japan) equipped with MIchrome 20 camera (Tucsen, China).</p>
<p>The most representative thalli were dried and deposited in the herbarium “CAT Sectio Algae – Herbarium exiccata” of the University of Catania.</p>
<p>For each identified species, the following information is provided: basionym, homotypic and heterotypic synonyms, type locality, previous records in Italy (if any), sampling site, herbarium specimen deposited, and a description of the morphological and reproductive characters of the identified species. <p>The thalli formed turfs arising from a perennial basal crust, approximately 2–17 cm tall. Upright axes were uniaxial, pseudoparenchymatous, and unstalked, dark green in colour, and slightly curved (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3">3</xref>a). The thalli lacked true branches; however, in parts where the axes were broken, young branches developed, which can be described as “false branches” (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3">3</xref>c). Nodes and internodes were clearly distinguishable (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3">3</xref>b). The nodal basal portion varied between 381 and 520 μm, the nodal median portion between 596 and 820 μm, and the nodal apical portion between 320 and 636 μm. The internodal basal portion was 212–380 μm, the internodal median portion was 437–540 μm and the internodal apical portion was 400–485 μm. The nodal to internodal ratio ranged between 1.3 and 1.4. The central axis of the thallus was composed of numerous cortical filaments and radial cells that departed from them, consisting of two layers, the proximal one not touching the outer cortex, and the distal one, Y-shaped, connected to the cortex (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3">3</xref>e, f). The thalli were monoecious. In the fertile thalli, the spermatangial sori were arranged in nodal narrow rings, sometimes interrupted (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3">3</xref>b), while the carposporophyte was formed on the inner portion of the cortex. The carposporangia were arranged in chains (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3">3</xref>d), and each carpospore in the chain ranged between 25 and 30 µm in length and between 20 and 25 µm in diameter. Finally, the sporophyte (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Chantransia">Chantransia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> stage) was observed in several thalli. It appeared reddish to brownish in colour, with alternating and/or unilateral branching (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3">3</xref>g). This stage grew near the base of the gametophytic thallus. In one case, the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Chantransia">Chantransia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> stage was observed producing juvenile gametophytes from the branches of its filaments (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3">3</xref>h).</p>

(2002)</xref>, as well as the “false” branches, as reported by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Mitrović et al. (2021)</xref>. Similarly, the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Paralemanea">P.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="catenata">catenata</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> specimens showed the diacritic characters reported in all previous studies (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Mannino et al. 2003</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B31">Xie et al. 2004</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Carmona et al. 2011</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">Simić and Đorđević 2017</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B29">Vis and Necchi 2021</xref>). Our samples of both species, contrary to what has been reported in the literature, showed smaller carposporangia (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B29">Vis and Necchi 2021</xref>). These findings contribute to improving knowledge of the distribution of these species in Europe and Italy, indicating that both extend their range further south than previously reported.</p>
<p>The taxonomy of the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Batrachospermaceae">Batrachospermaceae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> is complex, since diagnostic characters are often ambiguous or insufficiently defined. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Kučera and Marvan (2004)</xref> noted that features considered diagnostic may vary depending on the age and maturity of the thallus, which can lead to misidentification. The identification of species within the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Batrachospermaceae">Batrachospermaceae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> is further complicated by the numerous taxonomic revisions over time (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B31">Xie et al. 2004</xref>). In fact, this taxonomic confusion has often led to the same species being described under different synonyms, as exemplified by the cases of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Lemanea">L.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="fucina">fucina</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Lemanea">L.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="mamillosa">mamillosa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Kumano 2002</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">Eloranta et al. 2011</xref>).</p>
<p>Beyond a reliable taxonomic identification, it is essential to understand ecological preferences and resilience to anthropogenic pressures. Indeed, species of the genus <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Lemanea">Lemanea</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> are known to be adapted to specific environmental conditions, making them vulnerable to human-induced disturbances (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Mitrović et al. 2021</xref>). In our study, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Lemanea">L.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="fucina">fucina</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> was restricted to Monte San Nicola, a natural site with low levels of anthropisation. In contrast, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Paralemanea">P.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="catenata">catenata</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> was observed at both Monte San Nicola and Passo Mojo, a site more affected by human activities. The limited abundance of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Lemanea">L.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="fucina">fucina</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> compared to <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Paralemanea">P.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="catenata">catenata</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, suggests that the latter species may have a broader ecological tolerance, being more resilient to environmental impacts. Furthermore, the presence of carposporangia in both species may indicate the healthy state of populations inhabiting non-anthropised areas along the Alcantara River.</p>
<p>Monitoring sensitive species allows for the early detection of environmental changes, enabling the identification of their causes and timely intervention (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Gutowski et al. 2004</xref>). In this context, river dynamics strongly influence community composition. Indeed, summer variations in the river flow dynamics caused both the desiccation of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Lemanea">L.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="fucina">fucina</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Paralemanea">P.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="catenata">catenata</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> thalli and the subsequent dominant growth of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Cladophora">Cladophora</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> sp. and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vaucheria">Vaucheria</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> sp. These algae also colonise the less turbulent portions of the river. They are likely to be competitively advantaged when the limited flow of the river does not allow the establishment of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Lemanea">Lemanea</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> sp. and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Paralemanea">Paralemanea</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> sp, which require turbulent water. <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Nostoc">Nostoc</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> sp., on the other hand, mainly grows in isolated colonies on riverbanks or in areas where the water flow is less turbulent. Under climate change scenarios predicting reduced precipitation and river flow (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Billi and Fazzini 2017</xref>), these dynamics could be further impacted.</p>
<p>In conclusion, additional investigations are needed to gain better knowledge about the distribution and environmental sensitivity of freshwater algae within river systems. Such research will be crucial for developing effective conservation and monitoring measures aimed at protecting freshwater habitats, which are becoming increasingly susceptible to anthropogenic pressures and climate change.</p>
